This form of weaving is still common in Oaxaca. It is used to make fine, narrow cloth. Gabino shows one weaver at work whereas two or three weaver as might use the same tree to anchor their looms.

An early work by Coindo Melchor Gomez, who was one of the first generation of the best of the Oaxacan woodcaravers depicting traditional subjects as well as imaginary ones as e.g. his 'Illusions'.. Unfortunately in this object one of the two oxen is lost, so is the farmer who once led the traditional ox cart.

This work is carved by her brother Candido. Whilst he has carved many snails this snail ridden by a fairy is one of three examples known to exist. This piece has been commissioned in an attempt to continue this subject with unique variations (here fairy blowing a trumpet).

At 87 years old, Francisco is the father of all woodcarvers. He is the one carver that depicts the world around him. He documents a way of life. Francisco sometimes uses wood that has a split or old insect holes. He often uses wood filler to stabilise joints. Figures are nailed through a base and may not join with the base perfectly and not stand upright. These features, along with his carving and painting, are by now essential characteristics of his work.

Luis Pablo brilliantly interprets our special commission. Laika, the first dog in space, was launched into space  aboard Sputnik in 1957. This piece mirrors the model of Herge's fictional Tintin and Milou standing by their rocket that took them to the moon. Laika's rocket was real and she was the fearless face of early space travel.

At the foot of the cactus sits a 'tlacomiztle' (racoon like carnivore) watching every move of the grasshoppers.
